Governor McDonnell Announces New Full-Service DMV at Fort Lee in Prince George County
– Partnership with Military Installation Provides Virginia's Active Duty Personnel, Veterans and Families Increased Access to State Government –

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell today announced an agreement between the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Fort Lee to open a full-service DMV customer service center (CSC) at the military installation in Prince George County. DMV's new partnership with Fort Lee supports the governor's pledge to better serve Virginia's active duty military personnel and veterans.

Speaking about the partnership, Governor McDonnell commented, "Fort Lee has recently experienced a massive population increase, much of which is due to the realignment of military organizations from other parts of the nation. By placing a DMV on base, the Commonwealth can better serve the unique needs of Virginia's active duty military personnel, veterans, families and installation support staff."

Fort Lee is the third-largest training site in the U.S. Army. Its population exceeds 33,000, greater than the individual populations of neighboring cities Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg.

U.S. Army Garrison Fort Lee Commander Colonel Rodney D. Edge remarked, "Our mission is to provide base operations support, quality of life and services essential to the entire Fort Lee community. Partnering with the state to bring access to these critical services directly to our population supports these goals."

Renovations for the new DMV office are under way in the Bloom Building. The Fort Lee CSC, slated to open Oct. 22, will be approximately 1,300 square feet with four service windows and three testing stations. Staffing plans call for two full-time employees and supplemental part-time positions. Service at this location will be only for individuals with base access credentials.

DMV Commissioner Richard Holcomb stated, "The demand for an office in this rapidly-expanding community is evident by the popularity of our mobile visits over the past year-and-a-half. Hundreds of soldiers and family members have received service by DMV 2 Go, rather than travelling to the Petersburg or Hopewell offices which handle more than 75,000 transactions annually. Those nearby locations will have increased capacity and shorter wait times when the Fort Lee office opens."

The Fort Lee CSC will bring the total number of DMV CSCs to 80, including a satellite office at the Pentagon and five mobile offices.
