May 12 - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today released details of his transportation plan and called for a special session of the General Assembly to address transportation on June 23. The Governor’s plan fills our growing road and bridge maintenance deficit to promote safety, provides relief for regional transportation needs, and invests in innovative approaches to Virginia’s transportation challenges. At the February Commonwealth Transportation Board meeting Reta Busher, the chief financial officer for the Virginia Department of Transportation, provided an overview of the funding outlook for the six-year plan. Please click here to view this presentation.
Six-year transportation revenues are down by $1.1 billion from a year ago. These revenue shortfalls will result in a 44 percent reduction in funding for primary, secondary and urban highway construction, and a 10 percent reduction in transit allocations.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board will hold several public hearings to discuss revisions to the six-year improvement program. Please click here to view the schedule and learn more about these meetings.
