Governor Northam Declares State of Emergency in Advance of Expected Winter Storm
Governor Ralph Northam today declared a state of emergency in advance of winter weather effects on southern Virginia anticipated to begin this weekend and last into the early part of next week.

Bitter temperatures and a strong storm front expected to pass through Virginia this weekend will set up conditions for a wintry mix of snow, sleet, ice, and rain over parts of western, central, and northern Virginia. Governor Ralph Northam has placed state agencies, including the Virginia Departments of Transportation and Emergency Management, and State Police, on alert. Preparations are being made to have crews in place on extended shifts and in greater numbers to address expected slippery roads, power outages, and other public safety concerns throughout the weekend.

Governor Ralph Northam today issued Executive Directive Two which establishes an Executive Leadership Team on Highway Safety that is charged with reducing the rising number of fatalities on Virginia’s roadways. The team is comprised of representatives from the Virginia Departments of Motor Vehicles, Transportation, Health, Education, and State Police, and is led by the Deputy Secretaries of Transportation and Public Safety and Homeland Security.

Governor Ralph Northam today urged Virginians to help drive change in the Commonwealth’s traffic safety culture by joining the Toward Zero Deaths Virginia movement. Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) is a national strategy on highway safety that uses a unified approach to change driver behavior and improve highway safety with a goal of ultimately reducing the number of traffic-related serious injuries or deaths to zero.
Ninth Cargo Resupply Mission Successfully Launches from Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport
Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, NASA, and Virginia Space celebrate a successful NG-10 launch for cargo resupply to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission occurred on November 17, 2018, at 4:01 a.m. from Virginia Space’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) Pad 0A located at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. MARS Pad 0A was built by the Commonwealth of Virginia to accommodate the Antares 230 medium-class liquid-fuel rocket and Cygnus spacecraft.
Governor Northam Announces Amazon Selects Virginia for Major New Corporate Headquarters
Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Amazon, Inc. will invest approximately $2.5 billion to establish a major new headquarters in Virginia that will create more than 25,000 high-paying jobs over 12 years. The headquarters will be housed in a collection of new and renovated buildings located in National Landing, which includes portions of Pentagon City and Crystal City in Arlington County, Virginia and Potomac Yard in the City of Alexandria, Virginia. Amazon’s initial growth is expected to be focused in the Crystal City and Pentagon City portions of National Landing.

Governor Ralph Northam today announced that the Commonwealth of Virginia will invest $14 million, or 15 percent, of the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust to fund the deployment of all-electric transit buses across Virginia. Governor Northam made the announcement during remarks at the Governor’s Transportation Conference and Innovation Summit in Norfolk today. The four-day conference is the annual gathering of transportation professionals in the Commonwealth.

In a news conference held today, Governor Northam launched the Driven to Protect public-private partnership that is developing technology to eliminate drunk driving and save lives on Virginia roads. The partnership is the first between a state government and the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety Program (DADSS) to deploy in-vehicle alcohol detection sensors (ADS) that will determine when a driver is impaired with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at or above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
